Sylvester Stallone Has Another ROCKY Movie Planned

Remember this?

“I am reposting this because there was a technical difficulty. I just want to thank everyone around the whole wide World for taking the Rocky family into their hearts for over 40 years. It’s been my Ultimate privilege to have been able to create and play this meaningful character. Though it breaks my heart, Sadly all things must pass… and end. I love you Kind and generous people , and The most wonderful thing of all , is that ROCKY will never die because he lives on in you ….”

That was the caption on a post that Sylvester Stallone put on Instagram last November in the wake of Creed 2 happening. Here is what the actual transcript of the video says:

“Well, this is probably my last rodeo because what I thought happened, and has happened, I never expected. I thought Rocky was over in 2006 [Rocky Balboa]. And I was very happy with that. Then all of a sudden this young man presented himself and the whole story changed,” he says. “It went on to a new generation. New problems. New adventures. And I couldn’t be happier as I step back because my story has been told, there’s a whole new world that’s going to be opening up with the audience, with this generation. Now you [Jordan], have to carry the mantle.

Creed 2 was to be the last time we were to see Rocky. The way the movie treated the character made that okay. He received the closure the character deserved. He said he was done. Twice.

Well things changed because now Stallone, who will release his “last” run as Rambo later this year has teased a new Rocky movie. In an extensive piece in Variety, he has this to say about what the plot would be:

“Rocky meets a young, angry person who got stuck in this country when he comes to see his sister. He takes him into his life, and unbelievable adventures begin, and they wind up south of the border. It’s very, very timely.”

He’s right about it being timely, immigration is a topic on everybody’s minds right now, and this is looking to play right into that. Stallone didn’t mince words about it:

“Yes. Do you tell someone that you just met in the street who’s struggling and homeless to get out, or do you take him in? If you take him in, you’re in trouble.”

Negotiations are already underway for Stallone to write and star. MGM is apparently very keen to get it done, with Stallone saying “they want to go tomorrow.

Stallone had the best way to sum it up, which is a complete 180 from what he said in November.

“There’s a good chance that “Rocky” may ride again.”

When Stallone begins promoting Rambo: Last Blood, and he says its his last time playing that character, I will remember this article. Unless Rambo dies in that film, I won’t believe it anymore.

It sounds like this new Rocky movie has nothing to do with boxing. While I think art making a commentary on the awful way the US is treating immigrants is a good thing, straying away from boxing is the film losing a piece of its identity. But maybe that’s the metaphor.
