Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach To Write Margot Robbie’s BARBIE Movie

There is nothing you can say or do to make me interested in the Barbie movie. Wait, what? WHO is writing it? Greta Gerwig AND Noah Baumbach? Gerwig might direct too?

THR is reporting that the duo has signed on to pen the Margot Robbie-led film, with Gerwig also possibly directing it. This adds a whole new layer to a movie I had no reason to be interested in.

Gerwig is a wonderful filmmaker, having done things like Lady Bird in 2017 (which I highly recommend you watch if you haven’t seen it yet). She also has the upcoming Little Women to her credit, which stars Meryl Streep, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, and Florence Pugh.

As for Baumbach, he wrote a fun dysfunctional-family movie for Netflix called The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) with Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler. He also wrote The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou with Wes Anderson.

Gerwig and Baumbach have collaborated before, in things like Mistress America and Frances Ha. They are the last two names I would ever associate with a Barbie movie. That is why this is an inspired, and excellent choice.

If Barbie has the protagonist go on a rich and emotional journey like Lady Bird, that would be something special. It feels like this choice was deliberate, to get people like me to pay attention to it, instead of instantly writing it off. Well, it worked. I am very curious as to what this is going to be now.

Both are Academy Award nominated writers. To take something as vapid as a Barbie doll and make her relatable, deep, and worth anchoring an entire movie takes a special caliber of writer. I do appreciate the Warner Bros willingness to take a risk with a storied brand.

If this still doesn’t move the meter on the Barbie movie for you, check out both Lady Bird and The Meyerowitz Stories. You might find some of the same excitement, or pure curiosity I have for the Barbie movie because of it.
