Josh Gad Confirms He’s Not Actually Playing Penguin In THE BATMAN

Well, that settles that…

Josh Gad has been dropping “teases” for over two years now that he’s- at the very least- interested in playing Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. I’ve chronicled that here at Revenge of The Fans before, and I have to admit: He even kind of had me fooled into thinking that something must be up.

But as it turns out, it was all fun and games for Gad.

Gad took to twitter this week to finally clarify that he is not going to be the next cinematic Oswald Cobblepott:

“Ok, seeing as I keep getting this question…as much as I have LOVED torturing you all with teasing you about the Penguin, I feel like it’s time to tell you…I’m NOT actually playing this character. But I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the fan art and the love.”

This was in response to a question from our pal Justin Shanlian, who’s appeared on my show The Fanboy Podcast and on whose excellent Shanlian on Batman podcast I’ve popped up a couple of times as well.

So it looks like Justin finally got to the bottom of this little “Josh Gad as The Penguin?” subplot that’s been playing out since the actor’s first faux tease back in May of 2017.

Interestingly, Gad has made this declaration the same week that rumors sprang up that Andy Serkis was circling a role in The Batman. And the role most people have fan-cast Serkis as? The Penguin.

Just a coincidence? Probably. But when it comes to Batman, it’s always fun to try and connect the dots. After all, he is the World’s Greatest Detective.

What do you make of this? Are you relieved that it won’t be Gad? Were you hoping it would be?
