There is a fine line between horror and comedy. Both genres have a tendency to reach towards uncomfortable situations and topics to elicit specific reactions from audiences, be it a shriek of terror or a fit of laughter. It also isn’t uncommon at all to see comedians veer into the world of horror and yield great results, such as with Us and Get Out director Jordan Peele, who was previously best known as one half of the Key & Peele series on Comedy Central. Not to mention a certain comedy writer named William Peter Blatty who found his life defined by a certain horror novel he wrote titled The Exorcist. Now comedic actor Chris Rock is joining their ranks!
It has been announced that Rock is collaborating with Lionsgate on a new spinoff of the iconic Saw series. The script was previously reported to be written by Jigsaw writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, now known to be based on a story Rock conceived. The film will arrive in theaters on October 23rd, 2020. Rock stated, “I’ve been a fan of ‘Saw’ since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”
“When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in,” added Joe Drake, Chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group. “‘Saw’ is one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of all time and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous ‘Saw’ films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”
“Chris wants to put his own spin on the ‘Saw’ franchise in the way Eddie Murphy put a completely fresh perspective on buddy-cop films with ’48 Hours,’” said long-time Saw producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules. “This new ‘Saw’ is going to be an event film in the making for horror fans. It will have all of the twists and turns and hardcore layers that our fans expect directed by one of the masters of the craft, Darren Lynn Bousman. We can’t wait to get started.”
Admittedly I don’t have very much attachment to the Saw franchise myself, but I can’t help but be a bit curious of the results that Rock might yield here. It’s always exciting to see a new voice join the horror crowd, especially one with a talent for comedy!
