There are many live action remakes of classic Disney films happening. Dumbo already came and went this year, and Aladdin will hit theaters later this month. One of the first live action takes on their own properties that Disney did was Maleficent, about the villain from Cinderella. Now you can see the first trailer for the sequel, courtesy of Disney.

It’s good to see the future star of Marvel’s The Eternals in front of the camera again. She had a bit of a health scare when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and hasn’t done much work in front of the camera as of late. She directed the excellent First They Killed My Father in 2017, which you can find on Netflix. Her last starring role was in 2015’s By The Sea.

While a lot of the live action Disney stuff are straight up remakes, Maleficent is a different story with familiar characters. Mistress Of Evil looks to be expanding on that premise.

There were rumors of a Cruela de Vil movie happening, starring Emma Stone, but there hasn’t been an update on that project for some time. Still, the first Maleficent paved the way for “villain prequels” of animated classics, so if it does happen, that’s why.

The trailer looks like a Disney movie, and I’m sure it will do just fine at the box office. There are fans of Cinderella and of the first film who will be interested in this.

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil hits theaters October 18.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is a fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora. The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning from a story by Linda Woolverton and a screenplay by Linda Woolverton and Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster, the film is produced by Joe Roth, Angelina Jolie and Duncan Henderson with Matt Smith, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Michael Vieira serving as executive producers.
