AVENGERS: ENDGAME Katherine Langford’s Role Revealed
Disclaimer. Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame ahead. Travel further at your own risk.
Katherine Langford was cast in the box office hit Avengers: Endgame almost six months ago, in a covert role. When Endgame hit theaters two weeks ago, people were searching for the 13 Reasons Why star- only to find she wasn’t in the film. The Russos went on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast and spilled the details on Langford’s role, who she was, and why we didn’t see her.
Joe Russo revealed during the podcast that Langford was brought on to play an older version of Tony Stark’s daughter Morgan Stark:
“There was an idea that we had that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers. And that there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station.”
If you’ll remember at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, after snapping his finger to kill half of all living life, Thanos is transported somewhere other than Earth, some other realm. He is confronted by a childlike Gamora who asked “What did it cost?” That scene seems similar to the idea for Tony’s way station, and it was fully shot by the Russo brothers. On test screenings however, the scene was regarded as unsatisfying, and so ultimately it was cut from the final film.
Anthony Russo, the other half of the directing duo got the chance to explain the decision:
“What we realized about it was we didn’t have, we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter so it wasn’t ringing to us, resonating with us on an emotional level, which is why we moved away from it.”
This resulted in the final scene with Pepper Potts sitting by Tony as he passes, affirming she and Morgan (and the world) will be alright.
I’m definitely sensing there will be deleted scenes on the home release of Avengers: Endgame. That can’t just be me, right? What do you think? Would you have wanted Tony to have the final chance to have a goodbye moment with his daughter where he was present?
