Box Office: THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA Scares up the Top Spot

Despite the title, Warner Brothers and producer James Wan were not cursed by the newest entry in The Conjuring Universe.

This weekend The Curse of La Llorona opened with an impressive $26.5 million. The horror genre is usually very front-loaded, and, with a 26.2% drop from Friday to Saturday, The Curse of La Llorona is no exception; however, the budget was a scant $9 million, so the film is already in the black.

After two weeks at number one Shazam! dropped to number two with $17.3 million. That’s a week to week decrease of only 29%. Not bad for a film in its third weekend of release. It’s now at $121.3 million, and on its way to- hopefully- crossing $400M worldwide.

The inspirational, true life, family film Breakthrough debuted at number three with $11.1 million. It wisely started early on Wednesday to take advantage of schools being closed for the Easter/Passover holiday weekend, and is now at $14.6 million domestic.

Captain Marvel rose two places to reenter the top five in the number four spot with $9.1 million. In yet another milestone for the $1 billion+ grossing film, the domestic total has just hit the $400 million mark.

The comedy Little fell three spots to number five with $8.4 million. It’s domestic total is at $29.3 million.

Outside of the top five, the reboot of Hellboy dropped an astounding 67.8% and fell seven (!) places to number ten with $3.8 million. Its at $19.6 million domestic. I don’t think we’ll be seeing a sequel to this one anytime soon.

Next week the summer movie season kicks off early with Avengers: Endgame. I’m going to see it Thursday night, and again Saturday morning. I can’t wait!

What do you think Endgame will make in its opening weekend? Do you think it’ll beat Avengers: Infinity War‘s record of $258.6 million? Let us know in the comments below.

Here’s the full top ten. As always, worldwide numbers include the domestic takes, so if you need to know what the international numbers are you’ll have to break out the calculator.

What’d you think of this week’s box office?
