Box Office: SHAZAM! Takes the Top Spot Again!
A few new releases went wide this weekend, but only two managed to crack the top five. Neither of those had the strength to beat Shazam!
That’s right, as I predicted last week, DC’s own Captain Marvel held the top spot for a second weekend. Shazam! added an additional $25.1 million to its coffers, dropping a mild 53% and bringing its domestic cume to $94.9 million.
Little, the new comedy starring Regina Hall, Issa Rae, and Marsai Martin, opened to an impressive $15 million. The flick only had a budget of $20 million, and earned a B+ Cinemascore, so I see profitability in its future.
The new reboot/remake/re-imagining, (whatever), of Hellboy only managed a third place opening with $12 million. The new film stars Stranger Thing‘s David Harbour in the title role. I went to see it, and, let me just say, this one is kind of a mess. I can see it becoming a “so bad it’s good” type of thing, but I’d be shocked if this starts a new franchise. Personally, I think a niche property like Hellboy is better suited to a series on a streaming platform.
Pet Sematary dropped two spots to number four with $10 million. It’s domestic total is at $41.1 million. That’s pretty big tumble of 59.2% from last week. Looks this one is petering out pretty quickly.
Disney’s Dumbo is still hanging out I’m the top five, but this will probably be it’s last week. It’s at number five with $9.1 million, and $89.9 million domestic.
The big releases next week are The Curse of La Llorona and Breakthrough. The latter is getting a jump on the Easter holiday weekend by opening on Wednesday.
Here’s the full top ten. As always, worldwide numbers include the domestic takes, so if you need to know what the international numbers are you’ll have to break out the calculator.
What’d you think of this week’s box office?
|Rank||Title||Weekend Take||Domestic Total||Worldwide Total|
