Captain Marvel recently broke the billion dollar mark worldwide, and everyone’s ecstatic. Brie Larson, the actress in the leading role recently appeared at the Tina Brown’s Women of the World conference, and via Deadline, spoke on the success of the movie and her directorial debut with Unicorn Store.

“I’m grateful to have broken this glass ceiling, — I don’t know why it was so hard for people to believe it could happen… I understand film history. …This weird idea that women maybe can’t open movies is bogus.”

This means so much according to Larson, as well as all of us around her to have a female led superhero movie break a box office milestone such as this. Larson spoke on her directorial debut with Unicorn Store, and how it opened her eyes to bring more positive change in Hollywood. “We have to break these boundaries, — Whatever that currency is, I’m spending it. I’m not going to save it in an account. We need the change now.” Larson ran into controversy over her comments on having a more diverse press corps on the Captain Marvel press tour. She’s been pushing more for extending opportunities out to different journalists and reviewers, even after having her comments misconstrued.

She clarified those comments, hoping to spread her point further.

“I want to go out of my way to connect the dots, — It just took me using the power that I’ve been given now as Captain Marvel. [The role] comes with all these privileges and powers that make me feel uncomfortable because I don’t really need them… It’s a by-product of the profession and a sign of the times. But any uncomfortableness I feel is balanced by the knowledge that it gives me the ability to advocate for myself and others.”

The significance of the character has been widely felt, with kids far and wide dressing in Captain Marvel gear. They’ve loved having a female hero they could look up to, especially in the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve got a great one to look up to in the growing DC Cinematic Universe with Wonder Woman, and she will have another appearance coming up in June of 2020. Captain Marvel will return in a few short weeks in Avengers: Endgame.
