Kevin Feige Weighs In On Rumors Of A Gay Lead Character In THE ETERNALS

Of the various upcoming films we currently know will be made in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I am most excited for Chloe Zhao’s The Eternals. Not much is known about the film yet. What we do know are the reported castings of Angelina Jolie as Sersi and Kumail Nanjiani in a currently undisclosed role. Plus, with Zhao herself in the director’s chair, I am itching to see how this ambitious MCU entry will ultimately come together. Moreover there has been a fair amount of murmuring recently over rumors that Marvel Studios plans for one of the male lead characters in The Eternals to be gay and are reportedly looking for an openly gay actor to play the role.

When asked about the rumors by io9 recently, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige commented on it:

Well it’s accurate in that we’ve talked about [it for] a long time. You look at the success of Captain Marvel and Black Panther. We want the movies to reflect the audience and we want every member of our global audience to see themselves reflected on the screen. And that’s what we’ve been doing for a long time. And certainly, that’s what we’re focusing on going forward.

Obviously there isn’t much to glean from Feige’s comment. He doesn’t confirm or deny the Eternals rumor, although he does acknowledge that the studio is looking to introduce LGBTQ+ characters in the MCU and continue increasing representation of various different communities in the franchise’s future films. My guess is that the rumor is accurate, but fans might have to wait awhile longer before they know who the mystery character will be. It would make sense, and be good for the brand as a whole if they could have as much diverse representation on screen as possible.

What do you guys think? Be sure to comment below!
