SHAZAM! Director Sandberg Talks About The Film’s Accidental Connection To George Miller’s JUSTICE LEAGUE: MORTAL
Shazam! is DC’s newest entry, and for the most part, it is pretty delightful. There are some surprises and nods in there to please the biggest of DC super fans, but is also accessible enough for general audiences. But there might be one Easter Egg that a lot of people missed.
There will be SPOILERS for Shazam! throughout the rest of this article. Do not proceed if you haven’t seen the movie yet.
In the film’s climax, Sandberg introduces the Shazam family. It is a great reveal for someone who hadn’t seen any of the toys released yet.
Two of the actors playing grown up versions of Billy’s friends are Adam Brody and D.J. Cotrona. Both actors were almost in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal that never happened. Brody was cast as The Flash, and Cotrona was cast as Superman. It seemed like a really fun – and intentional – nod to what could have been. But according to Sandberg, who told THR about the casting, it wasn’t until after they were cast that they realized the connection.
“We sort of realized afterwards that both Adam Brody and D.J. Cotrona were cast in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal, the movie that almost happened. Adam Brody was The Flash and D.J. was Superman. So, afterwards, we said, ‘Oh, sh*t! They finally get to be superheroes in a DC movie…’ They didn’t even know they were auditioning for superheroes.”
Despite Brody’s resemblance to Jack Dylan Grazer (Young Freddy), he wasn’t specifically sought out. It just happened after the normal audition process.
“It was just auditioning a lot of people. It wasn’t something where I thought, ‘Adam Brody! He’d be the perfect older Jack.’ It was just looking at tons and tons of tapes, and also auditioning people in person until you just find the right one.”
Call it luck, fate, coincidence, or destiny, the connection is a pretty cool one. With a fast-tracked sequel happening soon, it would stand to reason that Brody and Cotrona would both have bigger roles in it.
We will never get to see George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal, but at least its legacy lives on.
Though, this neat little Mortal easter egg will end up a blip on the radar if what our EiC heard is true and the man Miller had cast as Batman back then…becomes the Dark Knight of the future.
