Simon Kinberg Doesn’t Want You To Give Up On A GAMBIT Film
Gambit is an X-Men standalone film that has been in development one way or another for a decade now. It was planned to continue the narrative of X-Men Origins: Wolverine with Taylor Kitsch, until people saw the narrative of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Then it was retooled once they figured out that the X-Men canon was fluid at best. Channing Tatum was tapped to star, and a plethora of directors went through the revolving door. Once it was pretty certain that Disney was buying all of 21st Century Fox’s properties – which included the X-Men and Fantastic Four, people assumed that the big red REBOOT button would be pressed.
For the most part, they are correct. It wasn’t expected for anyone to be retained, other than Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool. But if you talk to X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg like Variety did, he still has hope that Gambit – with Tatum as the star – will still happen. You can watch the full video below.
“All of the movies at Fox are being evaluated. I love the idea of Channing playing Gambit. I think we have a great script for it and I think it’s a role he was born to play,” Kinberg said. “It’s a character I grew up loving and I know the fans love. So I suspect, I hope it will happen.”
It’s interesting to hear that “all of” the Fox movies are being looked at. Because that means way more than just Gambit. It would also mean Marvel is looking at things like Noah Hawley’s Doctor Doom and Tim Miller and Brian Michael Bendis’ Kitty Pryde. Hmm…
He also discusses the X-Men “merging” with the MCU. Kinberg wrote the script for Gambit, so he is very invested in the future of it. Since technically Tatum never played the character over at Fox, he could still show up as a new Disney iteration.
I have no doubt that we will see a live action Gambit again. But maybe he’s better suited for Disney+? Whether it’s the big screen or television, we’ll see the character in live-action at some point, I’m sure. It just might not be the vision that Kinberg and Tatum have. Let’s face it. They are in Kevin Feige’s house now. He has extra bedrooms for the X-Men characters, but he is not signing half the deed over to Kinberg. I like his enthusiasm, but I think this project will need more than his wide-eyed optimism to get done.
But what do you think? Would you like to see Marvel pick up Kinberg’s Gambit movie and turn it into a proper MCU release? Or would you be fine to see Deadpool be the only holdover from the Fox/Marvel era?
