Werner Herzog Reveals He’ll Play A Villain In THE MANDALORIAN
The Mandalorian is the first live action Star Wars television series. It was written and created by Jon Favreau. It will launch with Disney’s streaming service, Disney + (though I still hope they rebrand it to Vault Disney). We’ve yet to see anything substantial on it, but that is expected to change when Star Wars Celebration happens next month.
“Now this is not a secret anymore, a small part, real small part, in “The Mandalorian,” the Star Wars sequel or whatever you call it. I like to do it because I know I’m good on screen, but only if I have to play a real villain.”
Old guy with cold eyes and a strong accent? Perfect Star Wars villain material. Herzog is a legendary filmmaker, for him to be even a small part of the Star Wars universe is exciting. It shows what talent the brand can pull in, especially when they are willing to try something new.
If I offered one criticism of my favorite universe, it is that Star Wars doesn’t want to take chances. For it being a galactic universe, it often times feels very small. Everyone is related to someone, or knows someone. The tide on that seems to be changing. With Episode IX being the last of the Skywalker saga, it opens up the franchise to be able to tell new stories. Stories that will expand the universe, not make it feel smaller. The Mandalorian will help with that too.
Herzog will join the likes of lead actor Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, and Nick Nolte.
The medium of television is ripe for a live action Star Wars show. I’m glad there is high quality talent involved.
