SOPRANOS Prequel THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK Adds Michela De Rossi
It looks like The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark is going for some full Italian authenticity. Deadline is reporting Italian actress Michela De Rossi has been cast in the final major role for the film being produced by New Line Cinema.
Deadline reports that De Rossi will play “an ambitious Italian immigrant who comes to America and settles in Newark.” De Rossi has previously starred in the Italian productions Boys Cry and I topi.
The Sopranos is widely seen as the best television series of all time and the show that launched the current “golden age of television.” The show starred the late James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, who becomes the head of the DiMeo crime family. The show portrays him balancing his life with the mob while caring for his wife and children and battling depression and anxiety. The show ran from 1999 to 2007.
The Many Saints of Newark is written by Sopranos creator David Chase. It takes place during the Newark riots of the 1960s when tensions were high between African Americans and Italian Americans in New Jersey’s most populous city. The film will center around Dickie Moltisanti, a character frequently mentioned but never seen on the show. Moltisanti will be played by Alessandro Nivola. The Punisher’s Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Leslie Odom Jr., Corey Stoll, John Magaro, Billy Magnussen, and Michael Gandolfini, the son of James, will portray a young Tony Soprano.
The Many Saints of Newark is set for theatrical release on September 25, 2020.
