When it was reported that Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II would star in the new Candyman movie, it was assumed he would take over for original star Tony Todd. But now we are learning that is not the case. In an interview with Collider, Candyman director Nia DeCosta straightened out the facts.

“Well, it’s been slightly misreported. I can’t say what’s happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but he’s not replacing Tony Todd. That’s been reported, and I was just like, “I don’t know what to say about this. This is not right.”

This makes things way more interesting. Could Tony Todd be returning in some weird way? Is Abdul-Mateen II set to be a new version of Candyman? After all this movie is set to be a “spiritual sequel” to the original movie in 1992. It will even return to the original’s setting – a gentrified neighborhood in Chicago.

Jordan Peele wrote this new version, so expect anything to happen. It could very well tie into the original in a unique and fascinating way. In fact, being able to draw from the original and everything else that Clive Barker created is what enticed DeCosta when the opportunity arose to direct it.

“Oh, man, I love his work a lot, from Abarat to everything else. There’s so much specificity and dark whimsy in his work. Dark whimsy is not the right word, but there’s so much reality and truth in it, at the same time. Being able to take genre and expansive worlds and expansive people, and doing that as well as he’s done it, is a big thing. Also, there’s the weirdness of it that I think is really special, and how specific that weirdness is. That’s what I want to draw into our Candyman

It hasn’t been officially announced as to whether Tony Todd is returning in some form, but even if he isn’t we now have confirmation that whoever Abdul-Mateen II is playing will be a different character. That should make fans of the original a bit happier. They aren’t trying to remake that one, but add to its legacy.
