It’s Confirmed: TERMINATOR: DARK FATE Is The Name Of The New Sequel

All the way back in February, if you can remember that long ago (37 days…in a row!), it was announced that the working title for the new Terminator sequel would be Terminator: Dark Fate. Cameron even confirmed that was the working title. That means it could change, but chances are, that is what it would be. Well, guess what? That is what it is.

The Wrap confirmed it as such yesterday. Tim Miller, who directed the first Deadpool movie, is directing this one, but James Cameron is “heavily involved.”

The film will see the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger, which is nothing new, he has returned for several sequels before. But Terminator: Dark Fate will ignore everything after T2. This will be the official third installment in a new timeline. So the big news is that Linda Hamilton is returning as Sarah Connor, for the first time since T2.

Cameron previously had this to say about the character returning to the franchise in present day and her having survived everything that has happened since the last time we saw her officially:

“It’s hardened her even more, but in a way that made her much stronger. Maybe less likable, but stronger. And ultimately, she becomes a really important character in passing the baton to the new characters that come in. It’s a very female-centric film, which I’m glad Tim embraced those themes.”

A reboot of the timeline is probably the smartest thing they could do. Everything post Terminator 2: Judgement Day was mediocre at best. Rise Of The Machines was a sloppy phoned-in popcorn follow-up that made some rash decisions. Terminator: Salvation was….well, let’s just say the best thing to come out of that was the recording of Christian Bale’s meltdown. I hesitate to even mention Terminator: Genisys not only because I can never spell it correctly the first time, but it was so mind-numbingly awful that all you could do was laugh. The franchise has definitely had its own judgment day, so it is ready for redemption. To ignore the last 3 movies and get the franchise back on track is really the only logical choice.

Everything I’ve seen about Terminator: Dark Fate so far has me cautiously optimistic. I would expect a trailer relatively soon, since the movie is out November 1.
