THE SOPRANOS Prequel Film NEWARK Dated For Fall 2020 Release Date!
Last summer it was announced that director Alan Taylor would be helming The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel film to the critically acclaimed HBO series The Sopranos. More recently it has been announced that actors such as Goodfellas alum Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga would be part of the film’s main cast. In addition, actor Michael Gandolfini was announced recently to be appearing in the film as a younger iteration of Tony Soprano, who was played by his late father James in The Sopranos over a decade ago. Now the film has a set release date for next year!
It was announced that the prequel from New Line Cinema, now simply titled Newark, will arrive in theaters on September 25th, 2020. Details on the film currently remain scarce, but it’s known that the film will be set in during the Newark riots of the 1960’s, which involved repeated clashes between local African American and Italian American communities and turned lethal once tensions rose up to the gangsters in each group.
Additionally, we know that actor Alessandro Nivola of Face/Off and A Most Violent Year fame will appear in the film as a young Dickie Moltisanti, the late father of Christopher Moltisanti and cousin of Carmela Soprano. In The Sopranos, Dickie was already deceased from a prior hit job, but held a reputation as someone who turned the family into a powerhouse in the mob world in New Jersey.
I still need to go back and work my way through the six seasons of The Sopranos, but I’m very intrigued about Newark and look forward to seeing how the film will turn out when it arrives next year.
