Sony Has Spider-Man Plans For The Next 7-8 Years
Sony has a road mapped out for Spider-Man and his cohorts. Well, for at least the next decade. Variety did a profile piece on Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra and Sony Pictures Television chairman Mike Hopkins. The two, specifically Vinciquerra, gave some details on the potential “spider verse.” It’ll be termed Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, or SMC for short.
Vinciquerra had this to say about Sony’s Spider-Man plans:
“We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset, and that will not only be on the film side – it’ll be on the TV side. Our television group will have its own set of characters from within that universe that we will seek to develop.”
Sony will delve into the realms of television, and film, with its 900+ Spider-Man realm characters. A Sony specific streaming service is not coming, so these properties will be on other services. Sony has had immense success with Spider-Man properties recently, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse taking the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture, the PS4 Spider-Man game getting rave reviews, and box office success with Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Venom. Sony will partner again with Disney for Spider-Man: Far From Home, coming in June this year.
This definitely means we’ll have some spin-offs to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse coming. We have Spider-Man: Far From Home in June, so we’ll see if the hype can continue. The MCU Spider-Man is Tom Holland and he has been fantastic. Hopefully he can be a part of the Spider-Man plans for years to come.
Holland will return as Spider-Man in Avengers: Endgame April 26. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is out on digital release now, and will be available for blu-ray/DVD purchase March 19.
