Fraser Calls Abrams’ Old Superman Script ‘Shakespeare in Space,’ Talks Auditioning For FLYBY

Brendan Fraser can currently be seen as Robotman on DC Universe’s Doom Patrol series. Long before landing the role of Robotman in DC Universe’s Doom Patrol, Fraser was in line to play one of the biggest DC Comics superheroes of all time: Superman.

Brendan Fraser was just one of the actors to audition to play the Man of Steel in the 2000s that Brett Ratner would have directed from a script written by J.J. Abrams. The list of other actors who tried to land the coveted role includes Matt Bomer, future Superman Henry Cavill, and the guy who would end up landing it- albeit for a different project- Brandon Routh.

During a new interview with SyFy, Fraser was asked if there was any truth to the rumor that he was in line to play Reed Richards in the first Fantastic Four movie, and while he denies that, he does mention that he auditioned to play the Man of Steel for Brett Ratner back when Superman: Flyby was still on Warner Bros.’ slate. Here’s what Fraser had to say about auditioning for it:

“No. I auditioned for Superman [in what would become Superman Returns]. I even wore the suit. It was cool, it was pretty cool. I mean, I didn’t get the job. It went away. Brett Ratner was a bit “woo hoo” in those days, and that’s well documented. And that was a script J.J. Abrams wrote but it never got made.”

The rest of his statement on it is pretty interesting, though, as fans have commonly accepted the narrative that Abrams’ script was no good. Fraser, on the contrary, seemed to really like what Abrams created for Superman: Flyby:

“And it was freaking Shakespeare in space. It was so cool. It was worlds colliding and, it was really, really cool. But you know, I hear he’s done well since then. (Laughs).”

Considering the recent rumors that Warner Bros is the frontrunner to secure a development deal with Abrams and Bad Robot, it’ll be interesting to see if anything comes out of this praise for what Abrams would do with Superman.

Fraser has some interesting highlights in his filmography. Personally I think it would have been cool to see Brendan Fraser play Superman
