ARROW Will End Next Season With A 10 Episode Run

Well, this day was bound to come sooner rather than later. Arrow has been on TV since 2012, and has spawned an entire universe, consisting of four shows (five, if you count Batwoman, and even more if you count the animated properties.) Earlier, it was announced that Arrow was renewed for an 8th season, now we know that it will be its last.

Stephen Amell took to Twitter to announce the news:

Showrunner Beth Schwartz, and Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim released a statement to THR about it as well:

“This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind. We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.”

If you stop to think about it, the writing was on the wall. The show is showing flash forwards, which has a sense of finality to it. Amell asked the writers to hold nothing back and write the 7th season as if it would be its last. And of course, Crisis On Infinite Earths was announced to be happening.

In this seasons Elseworlds finale, Oliver Queen single-handedly set up Crisis by making a deal with The Monitor to save the lives of Supergirl and The Flash. Crisis On Infinite Earths doesn’t happen without a death. Traditionally, it is the death of a Flash. And while, that could definitely still be the case with Eobard Thawne, it might happen with Oliver Queen instead. One could argue that he used to be a Flash, if you count Elseworlds….

Elseworlds was the 9th episode of everybody’s season. With Arrow getting a truncated season, Crisis could very well be the penultimate episode of Arrow. Of course, there is a world where this happens after the finale, but I doubt it. They will want to go off on there own show. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some secret things were filmed during Crisis for the Arrow finale, with the cast members of the other shows.

Now of course, there is always a chance he doesn’t die, and will pop up in Batwoman and The Flash occasionally in the future. In fact, I would be shocked if we didn’t see anyone of the cast of Arrow ever again. The Arrowverse is big enough for Oliver, Felicity, Diggle, Rene, Dinah or Roy to pop up in the other shows during sweeps weeks.

Think of it like Iron Man. That was the movie that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But after Iron Man 3, the character didn’t get his own standalone movie again. Instead, he appeared in Avengers, Captain America, and Spider-Man movies. I can certainly see a path where that happens here. Maybe the annual crossovers will continue, and Amell, the Godfather of the universe that rested on his shoulders, will suit up again to help out his friends.

While Oliver’s death in Crisis would be extremely effective, superhero properties not named Logan are scared to pull the trigger on killing off a character. The more likely path is Oliver finally getting some peace, but keeping his suit “just in case”.

It has been an honor and a privilege to be an Arrow fan, and follow everything that has come from it. It is the gift that keeps on giving. With Batwoman possibly set for a mid-season premiere, that means it will start after Arrow ends. It is a beautiful way to make sure the legacy of the Arrowverse stays intact.

Arrow is in the middle of its 7th season right now, so with only a handful of episodes left, expect anything to happen.

Thank you, Arrow, for being my DC Universe.
