Over the past half a decade or so, Universal has tried twice to launch a cinematic universe based on their numerous iconic horror monster characters titled the “Dark Universe.” First came 2014’s Dracula: Untold and then 2017’s The Mummy– both ventures fell flat in their faces and seemingly crushed any chances of a potentially great franchise launching in the long term. Thankfully the new year rung in with some exciting news that Blumhouse Productions was teaming up with Universal on a new iteration of The Invisible Man, with Jason Blum producing and Upgrade filmmaker Leigh Whannell set to write and direct. Now we have an update on one of the film’s potential stars!

Variety reports that actress Elisabeth Moss (Us, Mad MenThe Handmaid’s Tale) is in talks with Universal and Blumhouse to star in The Invisible Man. The site notes however that negotiations between Moss and the studio are currently only in “the extremely early stages,” and also that their sources indicate that Johnny Depp is no longer involved to star in the titular role. Additionally Whannell will also act as a co-producer on the film.

While it appears that Universal and Blumhouse are no longer interested in pursuing the idea of having numerous monster movies connected to one another, I’m just relieved that this project seems to be bouncing back in general. I spent a good chunk of my childhood watching and rewatching several of the classic Universal horror films of the 1930’s and 1940’s and have wanted to see new takes on these stories for quite sometime. There’s absolutely potential in these IPs and I hope the two studios find success with The Invisible Man so that other characters such as Dracula are given another go.
