Hellboy is getting a reboot, starring Stranger Things’ David Harbour. The reception hasn’t been all that positive, mostly because people are so fond of the Guillermo del Toro versions. But this might help win some people over, it will officially be rated “R”.
@ERCboxoffice was the first to report this. The last part is a joke, but the R rating is real. The material lends itself to that rating, so that’s a good thing.
If you haven’t seen the trailer, you can watch it right here.
Since we know that Black Widow won’t be rated R, at least there is one comic book property that will occupy that space this year.
I personally like the look of Harbour’s Hellyboy. I know that people will be hard on it because they wanted a third one in del Toro’s franchise instead, but we should judge the movie on its own and not based off of something we want instead.
Joining harbor in the cast is Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil), Ian McShane (Deadwood), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost), and Thomas Hayden Church (Sideways). The film is directed by Neil Marshall, who has done episodes of Black Sails, Lost In Space, and Game Of Thrones. He is also rumored to be doing the Skull Island King Kong sequel, after his inevitable fight with Godzilla.
It is nice that studios are willing to let the material dictate the rating. If the story calls for an R rating, make it R. If the story calls for a PG-13 one, make it PG-13. The problem arises when a studio forces a story to be a certain rating, which can impact the integrity.
Hellboy hits theaters April 12.
Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.
