Michael B. Jordan’s Hitman Thriller THE SILVER BEAR Finds Its Writer and Director
Michael B. Jordan is one busy man these days. He just starred in Creed II a few months back, he signed a first look deal with Warner Bros. recently and he’s now voicing the lead role in an all-star cast for Rooster Teeth’s new anime web series gen:Lock. He even weighed in on out what iteration of Superman he’d want to play as on the big screen if ever given the chance. One of Jordan’s numerous projects that was reported on a while back though was a film titled The Silver Bear.
Did you walk out of John Wick thinking that the only thing that could make it better is if Michael B. Jordan was involved? Well someone, somewhere thought that, too. The film will see the actor star as a hitman named Columbus and could potentially expand into a full-blown franchise. While we’ve known for awhile that Jordan would star and produce in the film and that the script would be penned by Frank Baldwin (The Godmother), no director was announced initially.
That’s now changed.
It has been announced that The First Purge and Burning Sands filmmaker Gerard McMurray will direct The Silver Bear. He and Jordan previously worked together on Ryan Coogler’s debut film Fruitvale Station, which McMurray produced. Additionally, Vishal Rungta, Mark Fasano and Ankur Rungta will be producing the film for Nickel City Pictures and brought it to Lionsgate.
“Fruitvale Station changed our lives. Six years later I’m reuniting with Michael in 2019 and directing him in one of the most exciting and intelligent kick-ass action projects Hollywood and Lionsgate has cooking. It’s beyond dreams,” stated McMurray. “Michael is an amazing, one-of-a-kind talent. He will bring a chilling and unnerving edge, authenticity and precision to the character of Columbus. The Silver Bear is an incredible hunt-and-chase story about the most skilled and feared hitman in the underworld and I have a unique vision for how I want to bring that to life. I am beyond honored and excited to be working with such supportive partners as Outlier Society, Nickel City Pictures and Lionsgate on my next film.”
Rungta added, “From the first meeting, it was clear that Gerard was the right person to realize the potential of the underlying material and is a perfect match for Michael’s talent and charisma. This combination will deliver an interesting, layered action film that today’s audience will love.”
“Every step forward on The Silver Bear has been the perfect marriage of the material to the creative talent involved,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Nathan Kahane. “We could not be more amazed by the way this project has come together, especially with Gerard McMurray’s bold, creative vision for the movie and Michael B. Jordan’s immense skills as an actor and a producer.”
If The Silver Bear is successful (and with all the pieces they have in place, I don’t see how it couldn’t be), then expect more. They’re hoping this is a franchise-starter, and it helps that there’s a series of books about Columbus.
