We are finally getting a Black Widow standalone film, something that probably should have happened in Phase 1. Better late than never though. Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as the super spy, with Cate Shortland (Lore, Berlin Syndrome) directing. The script is getting another pass by Ned Benson, as Collider reports.
Benson, who wrote The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby, was brought in to rewrite the script. Marvel seemed to really like his take on the story. Not only that, but Collider posits that he landed the gig due to another job he has. He was hired to adapt a 7 part news article from the Dallas Morning News called My Aryan Princess for Amy Pascal. Scarlet Johansson was also attached to star in that. So it’s possible that Johansson liked his work enough to bring him on board this project. She was the one who recommended that Marvel hire Shortland for the director job, so she seems to have a lot of influence over the project.
“Rewrite” has this negative connotation that it shouldn’t have. Nearly every movie made goes through several drafts before it is brought to screen. A large percentage of those scripts are an amalgamation of more than one person’s work. There is nothing to worry about. This doesn’t mean the first script was bad, it just means Marvel is trying to make it the best it can possibly be, and that means giving it to another set of eyes to improve on it.
Black Widow is supposedly set before the first Avengers movie, but where in the timeline aside from that is unknown. Is it before her appearance in Iron Man 2? Is Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) involved? We will find out in due time. Natasha’s past has been hinted at before. Loki refers to certain events that Clint told him about while she was interrogating Loki in The Avengers. We even saw some flashes of her past in Age of Ultron when Scarlet Witch brainwashed her. The story could cover any, or none, of these events.
When we get more information, we will be sure to pass it along.
