Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the geniuses responsible for The Lego Movie, and 21 Jump Street, have signed on to adapt the novel The Last Human from Lee Bacon. The story is described as being “The Reverse E.T.”

Sony has acquired the rights after a tough bidding war with Netflix and Warner Bros. The story, as Variety puts it, is “set in a future in which robots have eliminated humans, when a 12-year-old robot discovers and befriends a human girl, then sets off on a journey toward a mysterious point on a map.

Lord and Miller produced the best superhero movie of 2018 – Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, as well as this week’s adequate sequel to The Lego Movie.

Lord and Miller will produce as well as direct The Last Human. It is not their first foray into sci-fi though, as they are also lined up to direct Artemis, an adaptation of the novel written by The Martian author Andy Weir.

It is curious where this will fall in their busy schedule. They are producing a ton of things. Having this sort of talent and a penchant for deep rich, and hilarious stories means their projects are always worth paying attention to.

The whole Solo: A Star Wars Story debacle didn’t seem to hinder their careers at all, which is a good thing. While we will probably never know, there is this morbid curiosity surrounding their version of the movie, and what happened.

This will be the first novel of Lee Bacon’s to be adapted. He is also responsible for the Joshua Dread and Legendtopia books. If this takes off, expect those to be adapted as well.

Lord and Miller have one of the most unique filmographies in the business. Hopefully that continues for many years to come.

There is no release date known for The Last Human yet, be we will be sure to keep you posted.
