R-Rated DEADPOOL Films Will Continue Under ‘Carefully Branded’ Banner, Says Disney’s Iger

If there was one dominating concern among superhero movie fans when news broke out that the Walt Disney Company was buying 21st Century Fox, it was whether or not future Deadpool films would continue to be rated R. After all, it seems inevitable that current actor Ryan Reynolds will be one of the few components of Fox’s current iteration of X-Men characters to carry over into the MCU, given how the character’s nature of breaking the fourth wall and meta-humor can easily smooth over the transition into a new cinematic universe. Yet so much of the character’s humor seems to stem back from having the freedom of an R rating, even if the studio did recently experiment with releasing a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 in theaters in Once Upon A Deadpool.

On this year’s call with investors, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed once more that Deadpool and other similar Marvel content will be rated R. He stated, “We will continue in that business,” adding that “there’s certainly popularity” with these types of films.

However Iger did note that the plan currently is release these films under a different banner apart from the more traditional Disney or Marvel titles by “carefully branding [R-rated films]…so we’re not in any way confusing the consumer.” As of yet, no confirmation was made on the validity of the recent rumor that Cate Shortland’s upcoming Black Widow film will also be rated R.
