Mega-Producer Lauren Shuler Donner Weighs In On THE NEW MUTANTS’ Future
Do you remember when the first trailer for Josh Boone’s The New Mutants was released back in October 2017? It was an interesting glance at a film that could have been ahead of the curve in Hollywood and act as one of the first and most notable examples of a superhero horror film. In case you were wondering, that film still isn’t out yet and now that seat has been filled by M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass and the upcoming James Gunn-produced Brightburn. In fact, no one evens knows for sure at this point if the film ever hit theaters.
When asked about the matter by CinemaBlend, co-producer Lauren Shuler Donner stated, “I’m being told yes. As I say, I took a step back, so that was under Simon [Kinberg]’s purview. I hope so. They worked on it hard. I do like the idea, we started off as more of a team kind of movie, and the decision came to it more of a horror film. I think it’s a good idea. I want to see it released. I’m hopeful that it will. I’d hate to see it thrown aside.”
Maybe it’s just my own personal biases about the current state of Fox’s X-Men cinematic universe, but Donner’s answer here came off as unconvincing to me. That isn’t to say that I think the film will never see the light of day, as I have no doubt the film will eventually find an audience of some sort. If I had to wager as to how audiences will see The New Mutants though, I think it’ll likely sent to debut at one of the streaming services.
