SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME: Jake Gyllenhaal Discusses His Role As Mysterio

Seeing a live action Mysterio in a mainstream big budget movie is peak 2019. The people who used to bully me for knowing who Mysterio is will now enjoy Mysterio in a movie this summer. That is crazy. What is even crazier is the talent attached to big budget comic book movies now. Plenty of A-List actors have at least one on their resume. The latest? Jake Gyllenhall, who is playing the villain in the new Spider-Man movie.

Talking to the Los Angeles Times, Gyllenhaal discussed what drew him to Mysterio.

For those that can’t watch, has a nice transcript of his quote.

“It’s great. He’s a great character. It’s one of those things, people have asked me for a number of years, ‘You wanna do a movie like that? If you were asked to, would you?’ And my response has always been, particularly since being at Sundance, so many of the stories have always been, for many years since I’ve been coming here, character-driven, and that has always been my desire, is to find something in that space, that seems to match my skill and also my own honesty. And it just so happened that it does with that part, so I’m glad that people feel excited about it.”

Comic book stories are taken very seriously now. There used to be this notion that they needed to be silly and campy. That is how we ended up with nipples on a Batman suit. (#NeverForget). But now we have stories like Logan and The Dark Knight – movies that get treated with the same love and care that they were in the comic books. Now nearly every comic book movie made is taken seriously.

I’m glad Gyllenhaal was able to find the same skill and honesty in Mysterio as he did in Bubble Boy….I kid. But it is a good sign. The MCU had a bit of a villain problem for a stretch, a problem that they seem to be trying to fix. Attracting an actor of Gyllenhaal’s caliber to a famous and beloved character like Mysterio bodes well for what to expect when the sequel drops this summer.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters July 5.
