SHAZAM! Director Discusses How The Film Stands On Its Own In The DCU!
Now that Aquaman‘s theatrical run is winding down a bit, eyes are shifting over to the next DCU film. After all, David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! is rapidly approaching its theatrical release in early April! Fans are expecting a new trailer to arrive in the near future, after a new exciting promo was released recently that included footage of a real life ferris wheel being destroyed as part of an action sequence in the film. In the meantime, sites are releasing interviews with the cast and crew from set visits from last year.
In one such interview, Sandberg spoke about the film to Comicbook.com. The director noted that Shazam! would differ from certain previous entries in the DCU in that the film would be a self-contained story rather than tie heavily into the rest of the cinematic universe.
“Well this movie’s mostly just about introducing Billy Batson and Shazam and who he is, how he came to be,” Sandberg elaborated. “It takes place in this DC world where all these heroes exist, but in some ways it’s both sort of self contained while also being a part of something bigger, but, yeah. That’s a non-answer.“
“You don’t have to have seen any of the other films, because it’s its own contained story,” Sandberg added. “It is more the world of it that’s part of a story.“
That last description definitely seems to match the first trailer we saw back in San Diego Comic Con 2018, where fans could easily spot newspaper articles about Superman and a lone Batarang resting on a mantel like part of a collection. After all, it’s the story of an adolescent growing up in a world of superheroes and getting the chance to become one himself.
These comments about where Shazam! fits into the DC landscape are also interesting to hear on the heels of last week’s comments by Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich about DC’s playbook when it comes to its shared universe.
