Last month was surprisingly quite a crowded time for new blockbusters. Generally speaking though, most of the online buzz circled around the one-two superhero punch of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and James Wan’s Aquaman. That said, there was another big IP that hit theaters that seemed to come and go domestically on a rather timid note- Travis Knight’s Bumblebee, a prequel worlds apart in tone and quality from the more commonly known Transformers films helmed by Michael Bay. Merging the spirit of 1980’s-era Steven Spielberg with a more traditional take inspired by the original cartoon show, the film received a very warm reception from the audiences that attended.
Thankfully it seems that enough people went to go see Bumblebee, as Deadline reports that a sequel is in early stages of development, as the film has just passed $400 million at the box office worldwide! While details are naturally vague still, the site suggests a possible buddy movie between Bumblebee and Optimus Prime, which could be fun and (small spoilers) would fit with how Bumblebee concluded.
Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura commented, “We had many objectives (including) to bring a new set of families into the series, and that succeeded; in the after markets that will continue to succeed in a big way. Part of our obligation was to bring people back who had left the franchise or never experienced it which worked well… We are finding our way. Our intention was we wanted to please the core fans but also bring a new audience.”
Needless to say, I’m quite excited. Bumblebee was a lot of fun and I would love to see more Transformers film in this vein. Hopefully Travis Smith agrees to come back and helm the sequel!
