Who Ya Gonna Call For A New GHOSTBUSTERS Film? Jason Reitman!

Well, I didn’t see that coming. There have been rumors of a new Ghostbusters film for years. Dan Aykroyd mentions it every time he speaks. It became something of a joke. When a new Ghostbusters did happen, it was completely separate from the 80s franchise. A different universe, and all that. But now Jason Reitman – son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman is putting the “legacy” in “legacy-quel” as EW announced that he is writing a will direct a new entry in the franchise.

Says Reitman of the project:

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

So, unlike the 2016 film, this will fall into the canon of the original 2 movies. However, there is no word on if Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson or any of the other members of the original cast will return.

“This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet.”

What if Venkman is taken by Gozer and the new cast has to find him and the film ends with one of the new Ghostbusters holding out the gun of the proton pack to give to Venkman as he slowly turns around after they found him on top of a mountain? Ghostbusters: The Slime Awakens!

But seriously, if you still aren’t sold, know this: Ivan Reitman will produce this film for his son. That is maybe the most adorable piece of movie news I have ever written.

Check out what Papa Reitman had to say about the day his son came to him with the pitch for this new Ghostbusters:

“It will be a passing of the torch both inside and out. It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career on his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil and said, ‘I know I’ve been saying for 10 years I’m the last person who should make a Ghostbusters movie, but…I have this idea.’ Literally, I was crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.”

I personally loved the cast of the 2016 Ghostbusters movie. The script was problematic and lackluster, but the 4 women were a ton of fun. No word on whether that universe will continue as well.

Sony is also developing an animated Ghostbusters project, presumably called Ghostbusters: Into The Ghost-Verse, which will come out after Reitman’s version. Like Spider-Man, Jason Reitman feels that both can exist concurrently.

“The Ghostbusters universe is big enough to hold a lot of different stories.”

Reitman summed up all of this – his father’s legacy, the franchise as whole, and the story freedom – quite perfectly:

Ghostbusters: Clever Subtitle Here Because Movies Don’t Use Traditional Number Schemes For Sequels Anymore will open in the summer of 2020.
