The Sopranos is one of HBO’s most prestigious shows. It changed the way that HBO approached television, and will be forever cemented in the pop culture lexicon. Well, it’s 2019. That means old is new again. So New Line is developing a prequel movie of The Sopranos called The Many Saints Of Newark. It was recently announced that The Punisher‘s Jon Bernthal and The Departed‘s Vera Farmiga (who can also be seen in the upcoming Godzilla sequel) will star.

Variety has the story. The film will be set during the Newark riots of the 1960s. They also report that more characters from The Sopranos – either ones mentioned or younger versions – are expected to appear. It was previously announced that Alessandro Nivola would play Dickey Moltisanti, the uncle of Tony Soprano, who is dead by the time the events of The Sopranos start to happen.

It will be interesting to see if it is a total prequel; or if they have some flashes to the present day. After all, the ending to the series was somewhat controv-

David Chase, who created the series, wrote the script, so at least it will stay true to the original vision. Alan Taylor who has directed a handful of Game Of Thrones episodes, and Thor: The Dark World will be on hand to direct the prequel.

A situation like this isn’t unheard of. A Deadwood movie is filming right now, after the show was abruptly cancelled by HBO. Even though Breaking Bad already has a prequel in the excellent Better Call Saul, a sequel movie is planned starring Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman. There have been 2 Sex And The City movies after the show ended too. While the prequel aspect is different than all of those examples, it fits this best. After all, James Gandolfini tragically passed away in 2013, and I don’t think anyone would want a Sopranos sequel without him.

No word on a release date for The Many Saints Of Newark yet, but we will be sure to share more information when we get it.
