BIRDS OF PREY (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) Is Kicking Off Production!

These days, we’re used to hearing news about productions stalling out, or getting delayed, or “needing more time to retool the script.” What we’re not used to are productions actually starting early, or exactly when scheduled. And such is the case for Birds of Prey (And The Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

While there had been some whispers going around that they may need an extra 2-3 weeks and would not meet their January 14th start date, we’re happy to report that things are going right on schedule.

That’s right, folks, an eagle-eyed fan spotted a bunch of Birds of Prey production trucks and vehicles on the Warner Bros. lot in in Burbank, CA. They caught it on film, and they’re claiming that filming has begun.

Now, I think it’s important to note that this fan is being a tad overzealous. What they’re seeing is simply the preparation for Monday’s shoot, and I think they’re incorrectly assuming that photography has actually commenced.

Regardless, it’s great to see things running smoothly on the DC production, and whether they’re filming today or on Monday, this is a great indication about how easily things are going the Birds of Prey. At a time when everyone is sick of hearing about “troubled” productions for DC films, things are going refreshingly smoothly here.

We’ve known for some time that the studio is high on the project. For starters, DC Entertainment is in love with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and have been trying to get another film starring her produced ever since 2016’s Suicide Squad came out and cemented her as a fan-favorite. But also, they’re high on Christina Hodson’s script. The Bumblebee scribe’s work on this was good enough to land her the scripting duties for Batgirl as well.

Director Cathy Yan also shored up a dynamite cast, surrounding Robbie with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ewan McGregor, Chris Messina, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell.

Last note: With filming starting Monday, this increases the likelihood we’ll get some official costume reveals soon. As I mentioned earlier this week, I’d heard the costumes would be far less grandiose that DC’s current smash hit Aquaman. Can’t wait to see them and judge for myself.

How do you think (or hope) the studio will handle the costume reveals? Will we get professionally-prepared promotional shots, like with Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Justice League? Or will it be like Shazam!, which was far more casual- with fans posting set pics, and Levi releasing one viral image of himself posing next to an official shot?

Let me know in the comments below!

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) arrives in theaters on February 7, 2020.
