MORBIUS Should Be Done Filming By May, But Then People Have To Watch It

Sony has a weird approach to making live-action Spider-Man movies. They put the webslinger exactly where he is supposed to be, but then they’re also trying to make a separate universe, without him. The first example of this was Venom. I was giving Sony the benefit of the doubt. But then I watched Venom, and I can safely say I want no part of this “other” universe anymore. However, the millions of people who helped the movie get to almost a billion dollars at the box office seem to disagree. So now more is happening. Next up? Morbius starring Jared Leto.

The movie has been quietly filming, and HN Entertainment is reporting that the film will begin shooting next month and wrap in May. There are more casting announcements sure to come, as it is still in the pre-production phase. That means we might see some footage of it in the summer, or a trailer by the fall, so prepare yourselves now. Deep breaths.

I like the character of Morbius. He was great in the animated Spider-Man cartoon in the 90’s. Daniel Espinosa is an interesting choice in the director. Writer Matt Sazama wrote both the 2017 Power Rangers movie, and the first season of the Lost In Space reboot on Netflix, both of which I enjoyed.

Sony made one of the best movies I’ve ever seen in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. That is where their focus should be. That is what they need to double down on and put their time and energy into. If this trend continues instead, we will be writing stories about a young Uncle Ben prequel series in development. Mark my words.

I don’t get the glow some people have for Venom. Even our own Editor-in-Chief wrote a fairly positive REVIEW for it, and defends it from “haters” like me on twitter. Seriously people, if you want to give me 8-15 dollars to grab a fan, go to the bathroom, and provide you with “a turd in the wind,” I will. I have spare time.

So tell me, are you excited about these extended Spider-Verse movies that have no Spider-Man in them movies?

Morbius is expected to hit theaters July 10, 2020.
