Kevin Smith Is Almost Ready To Shoot JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT (Finally)

It was early 2017 when Kevin Smith announced his return to his “View Askewniverse” with Jay And Silent Bob Reboot. Due to funding and health reasons, the project kept getting delayed. But now it seems closer than ever. To open 2019, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes had a “pre-pre-production meeting” to work on the movie.

The best promoter in the business also got a plug in for We Work – a company he does ads for on his podcasts. The woman in the picture, Jordan Monsanto, not only runs Smith’s company, but is also the wife of Jason Mewes.

For fans of the franchise, don’t fret about the “Reboot” title – it is very much a sequel to Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back. On several occasions, Smith has said what Reboot is about:

“It’s us, it’s me and Jay so it’s not really strictly a reboot in the way that people think of a reboot. If you remember Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back it was a movie in which Jay and Silent Bob found out Hollywood was making a movie about them so they went cross country to Hollywood to stop that from happening. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is completely f*cking different. In Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Jay and Silent Bob find out that Hollywood is making a reboot of that old movie that they had made about them, and they have to go cross the country to Hollywood to stop it all over again. it’s literally the same f*cking movie all over again. It’s a movie that makes fun of sequels and remakes and reboots while being all three at the same time.”

Smith has been clamoring to play with his old toys again. He tried to launch Clerks 3, but Jeff Anderson refused to return, so the movie was scrapped. He then shifted to making a Mallrats sequel, called Mallbrats. But Universal owns that, and wasn’t interested in making the movie. But Universal’s TV division was interested, so he adapted it into a TV series instead. But after 6 different distributors (Netflix, Showtime, Amazon, etc) turned it down, that went on the back burner. Then Smith realized that he alone owns the characters of Jay and Silent Bob. No one could keep him from making that movie if he found the funding, so Jay and Silent Bob: Reboot was born.

It actually works out better this way. Smith has always been the “indie” guy that made things happen himself. He only really needs himself and Jason Mewes to make this work, everything else can be fluid. For example, Stan Lee was supposed to make a cameo, but due to his death, that will be changed. Also, all of the fat jokes in the movie were changed to vegan jokes, in order to reflect Smith’s post-heart attack lifestyle.

I was at an episode of his podcast Jay And Silent Bob Get Old in Detroit in 2017. In honor of the “Freep Film Festival”, Smith treated our audience to a scene from the movie that he and Jay acted out live on stage. It killed with his crowd, which is really the group that matters most. He has done it several times since then, but I am pretty sure we were the first audience to hear it.

Due to Smith being an open book, we will get several minute updates throughout the entire movie. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did a podcast live from the set. So there will be no shortage of information when the Reboot machine starts to go.

There is no set release date for Jay and Silent Bob: Reboot yet, but I’d expect it late 2019 or early 2020.

If you want to see what a modern day Jay and Silent Bob would feel like, they appear in Drake’s Degrassi inspired music video from 2018 called “I’m Upset“. You can see them throughout the entire video, but primarily at the 2:58 mark and the 5:06 mark below.

Snootchie Bootchies.
