Fans have been waiting for the first trailer for Neil Marshall’s upcoming Hellboy reboot starring Stranger Things lead David Harbour for quite a while now. Early in September, it seemed like the first trailer would finally be arriving and then news hit the Internet that the film had been delayed until April 2019 soon afterward. Following the release of the film’s first poster earlier this week, fans can finally take their first look at the new iteration of Hellboy! Watch the trailer below!
One thing I find a bit odd from the trailer is the tone. I’m hardly an expert on the lore of Hellboy or the previous films helmed by Guillermo del Toro, but previous reports and comments on this film led me to believe that the film would be rather dark and violent. While it’s absolutely within the realm of possibility that the final film itself will be like that, this first look at Hellboy comes across far more in the raunchy, fun tone of Guardians of the Galaxy or Suicide Squad.
That said, there are certainly moments scattered around the trailer that could make for a serious character drama, even if the trailer tries to play them off as jokes or quips here. “Some dads get their kids Legos,” as Harbour’s Hellboy says in the trailer while inspecting his new pistol.
