Kinberg Thinks X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Is The Beginning Of A New Era (Spoilers: It’s Not)

In case you haven’t read any of the previous articles I’ve written here at RTF over the past six months about Simon Kinberg or his aspirations of making more X-Men films beyond Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants that are set in the now almost twenty year old Fox Cinematic Universe, I have been quite skeptical of his plans. I remain wary that his plans for a Gambit film will bear fruit, for starters. Whether you like it or not, the Disney-Fox Merger is going to happen and the status quo is going to change considerably for future X-Men films when the merger is finalized. It’s just not going to be the sort of change that I think Kinberg wants it to be.

I see it as a new chapter,” Kinberg recently claimed about his upcoming directorial debut Dark Phoenix in a new interview. “I see it as taking the franchise in a different direction tonally. And that doesn’t mean that the next one will have the same tone, it just means that the next one can have a different tone…

I can’t do it. In fact, I refuse to play ball with this story.

There is more to Kinberg’s quote where he discusses how the X-Men films have evolved since Bryan Singer’s 2000 original. It’s not a bad quote as his mindset in theory isn’t incorrect. The idea of providing different tones, genre influences from film to film is spot on and something that has been at the heart of Kevin Feige’s success with the MCU for the past decade.

However I think that all of these attempts to claim that the Fox canon of X-Men films isn’t on its way out the door are foolhardy and arguably disingenuous. Unless Kinberg transitions over to Marvel Studios and begins collaborating more directly with Feige on future X-Men films, chances are high that someone else will see that Gambit solo film come into existence. Aside from Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, I think we can expect to see new actors cast as Professor X, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and the rest as the vast world of mutants all start to find their way into the MCU in a few years time.
