Watch Nick Fury Fawn Over A ‘Cat’ In The New CAPTAIN MARVEL Trailer!
Well, as we mentioned yesterday, we were getting a brand new Captain Marvel trailer during Monday Night Football. Without further ado, it’s time to go higher, further, and faster!
This trailer gave us a bit more than the last one, but was still vague. Marvel is good at this. Second best to only Lucasfilm – give the audience a trailer full of visuals and moments. Make it a work of art, but don’t give away anything crucial. There is no denying – Brie Larson is going to be the new face of the MCU and the definitive Captain in the future.
We do get to see Annette Benning join the MCU (a sentence I never thought I would write). She is the latest screen legend, after Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Angela Bassett and Michelle Pfeiffer to be part of this universe.
Marvel.com also gives us the identities of a few of the actors. Jude Law is playing Starforce – which is usually a name given to a team in the comics, so he could very well still be Mar-Vell, unless they tweaked things like the MCU is known to do. Rogue One actor Ben Mendelsohn is playing Skrull villain Talos. I think Mendelsohn is out to play a villain in every franchise possible.
And of course, I’d be remiss not to mention the star of the trailer – a cat named Goose! In the comics, the cosmic cat is named Chewie. I can see why Marvel might have wanted to avoid any names associated with their Disney franchise cousins. Thing is, Chewie isn’t really a cat. Chewie is part of an alien species known as “Flerken”. CinemaBlend has a quick breakdown of how they differ from regular Earth felines.
Flerkens look exactly like cats, but they are very different when you start learning details about their species. For starters, they lay eggs and possess far greater intelligence, but the most fascinating thing about them is that they contain pocket dimensions inside their mouths. This not only allows them to store an infinite amount of material, but even allows them to achieve dimensional travel.
Fury fawning over Goose is adorable, but Goose might be more important than just a quick gag. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stole the show! (There is also a theory that Goose is responsible for Fury losing his eye! I hope that sweet boy doesn’t do that!)
There is a very funny moment in the comics between Captain Marvel and Rocket Raccoon over Chewie (Goose) the Flerken. CinemaBlend has it on their article, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a version of that in Avengers 4 either.
I am now fully on board for a Goose MCU movie. Petition coming soon.
Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8.
