Nia DaCosta To Direct A Jordan Peele-Produced CANDYMAN Reboot

A little over two months ago, a rumor hit the Internet that Get Out director Jordan Peele was set to produce a reboot for the horror classic Candyman. At the time, the rumor was unclear whether or not Peele himself would also direct the film and I brought up the possibility that perhaps he would hand the reins over to another lesser known director. Now we know for a fact the Jordan Peele-produced reboot is happening and another director will be at the helm.

MGM Motion Pictures announced that the Candyman reboot will be helmed by none other than Little Woods writer-director Nia DaCosta. Described as a “spiritual sequel” to the original, the new film reportedly “returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood. Production is expected to begin next spring. Universal Pictures will release the movie theatrically on June 12, 2020.

Nia DaCosta

MGM Motion Picture Group president Jonathan Glickman stated, “We cannot wait for the world to see what the mind-blowing combination of Jordan, Win, and Nia bring to the legend of Candyman. They have created a story that will not only pay reverence to Clive Barker’s haunting and brilliant source material, but is also thoroughly modern and will bring in a whole new generation of fans.

Peele added, “The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre. Alongside ‘Night of the Living Dead,’ ‘Candyman’ was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the ‘Candyman’ canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.

I still need to see Little Woods, but I’m actually rather excited that Peele opted to find another lesser-known director for this project. Hopefully DaCosta’s take on Candyman resonates with audiences!
