New HELLBOY Image Revealed As Director Discusses Making The Film With No ‘Handcuffs On’
Hellboy fans were recently dealt a swift kick in the gut when it was revealed that the upcoming reboot has had its release delayed a few months. But director Neil Marshall has some encouraging words about making the film true to its “violent and bloody” source material, and we’ve got a new image to share with you- courtesy of Empire Magazine.
Regardless of where you stand on the “I’m glad it’s a reboot” vs “Del Toro and Perlman deserved a third Hellboy“ end of things, you’re likely hoping that this film captures what makes the property so special. Director Neil Marshall sat down with Empire for their January issue, and he says the film absolutely takes its cues from the source material its based on, especially in terms of its gore and mature subject matter:
“It was always a case of, ‘When in doubt, go back to the source material.’ Some of the stuff is pretty sick. More violent and more bloody. We weren’t making it with handcuffs on.”
At a time when fans are extremely weary of studios stepping in with mandates and demands on their filmmakers, all with an eye towards making their movies more broad, safe, and family friendly, it’s comforting to hear that Marshall was apparently allowed to make this new Hellboy without any creative shackles.
As part of the upcoming spread in Empire, we’ve also been treated to a new image of Stranger Things star David Harbour as our titular antihero:
He looks pretty crazy, eh?
Hellboy will arrive on April 12.
