Oscar Isaac Talks About Carrie Fisher’s Presence in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX, More

Between theaters and Netflix, I’ve seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi around five times. Each time I like it more. I still don’t agree with all of the choices Rian Johnson made, but overall it’s not a bad film at all. In fact, I think it’s quite good. One of the choices Johnson made was to not alter the fate of General Leia after the untimely death of Carrie Fisher. So, the question going into Episode IX was how was J.J. Abrams going to do to address the loss of one of Star Wars‘ original trinity?

After discussing it with producers and Fisher’s family, Abrams said they were going to use CGI and previously shot footage of Fisher for Episode IX. Now, that doesn’t tell us much, but Abrams never does, so we shouldn’t be surprised.

Oscar Isaac, who has appeared as Poe Dameron in both Star Wars: The Forces Awakens and Last Jedi talks a bit about Leia’s presence in Episode IX. Here’s what he had to say:

“The story deals with that quite a bit. It’s a strange thing to be on the set and to be speaking of Leia and having Carrie not be around. There’s definitely some pain in that.

“It deals with the amazing character that Carrie created in a really beautiful way.”

I have no doubt that Abrams and his team have come up with a send off that will honor Fisher’s legacy.

Isaac also spoke about the mood on set while the film the final chapter in the newest Star Wars trilogy:

“There’s a looseness and an energy to the way that we’re shooting this that feels very different,” the actor added. “It’s been really fun being back with J.J., with all of us working in a really close way. I just feel like there’s an element of almost senioritis, you know? Since everything just feels way looser and people aren’t taking it quite as seriously, but still just having a lot of fun. I think that that energy is gonna translate to a really great movie.”

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters December 20, 2019.
