Margot Robbie Announces The Full BIRDS OF PREY Title (And It’s A Revealing Mouthful)!
The stage is set for Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey. Newcomer Ella Jay Basco was cast last week for the role of a young Cassandra Cain. Prior to that, it was reported that Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead had both been cast as Black Canary and the Huntress. The film also recently landed Ewan McGregor in the role of lead villain Black Mask. About a month ago now, acclaimed cinematographer Matthew Libatique confirmed that he had signed on to shoot the film and also hinted that the title had changed.
Lead star Margot Robbie took to Instagram with a photo of the title page of Christina Hodson’s script with a hand-written subtitle, announcing the full title as Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). While I think it’s a safe bet that most fans and audiences will continue to refer to the film simply as Birds of Prey, I actually like the subtitle. It’s appropriately cheeky and leaves the door open for a sequel that might not feature Harley in the film.
Interestingly enough, Robbie also drew a diamond on the title page of the script, along other various forms of decorum. Is this supposed to be the same diamond that’s been mentioned in recent plot reports? And the use of the word “emancipation” seems to confirm what folks have been saying about the film for a while, which is that a central theme of the film will be Harley breaking away from The Joker and coming into her own.
What do you think of the new, full title for Birds of Prey? It’s a bit of a mouthful, isn’t it? Be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments section down below!
