Birds of Prey has been the talk of the town lately with constant positive chatter surrounding casting announcements. Over the past month we received casting confirmation for Black Mask, Cassandra Cain as well as exclusive story details for the film.

Now Bionic Buzz recently caught up with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and asked about her next project to enter production, Birds of Prey.

“It’s sort of a spinoff of Suicide Squad. It kind of follows Harley Quinn, which is Margot Robbie’s character from those films, and this sort of girl gang that she puts together. I play Huntress, and we’ve got Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez and Ewan McGregor. It’s a really fun, fun cast. We haven’t started shooting yet, but we start shooting in January, and I can’t wait.”

Winstead confirms the January shooting start date and the film being a sequel of sorts to Suicide Squad. Previous reports suggested that Gavin O’Conner walked after his script was turned in for Suicide Squad 2 and WB chose not to move forward for being too similar to Birds of Prey. Suicide Squad 2 however is not dead, recently James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy fame was confirmed to be attached to the project as writer and likely director.

Over the past year, DC fans have had to lick their wounds over the Frankenstein version of Justice League released last November, but while we clamored for the Justice League SnyderCut, WB has focused on the future of the DCU behind the scenes. Lined up for release over the course of the next year or in some form of active development are Aquaman, Shazam! Joker, WW84 and Birds of Prey, not bad for a franchise many were ready to claim as dead after 2017’s Justice League.
