Jon Cryer Has Been Cast As Lex Luthor In SUPERGIRL

The Arrowverse is a wonderful place. I mean, it would be terrifying to actually live on one of those Earths as a human, but it is fun to watch. Those worlds are filled with heroes and villains from the far reaches of DC’s catalogue. Now they are bringing one of the most famous DC villains into the mix: Lex Luthor.

Two And A Half Men star Jon Cryer has been cast as Lena Luthor’s more famous brother. It might sound like a weird bit of casting at first, but he has played a Luthor before. In Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, Cryer played Lex’s nephew Lenny.

The Arrowverse likes to pay tribute to DC properties of the past. They’ve given roles to people such as John Wesley Shipp, Dean Cain, Teri Hatcher, Mark Hamill, and Helen Slater.

“We are enormous fans of Jon Cryer, and he was instantly our dream actor to play the iconic role of Lex Luthor,” executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller said in a statement. “Jon is a super-talent, and the fact that he played Lenny Luthor in Superman IV brings an added layer of legacy to his casting. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Jon to the Supergirl family.”

Cryer is known for more comedic roles, but he can certainly pull this off. Especially if they play out an “insanity” angle. There is no word on whether he will ever share screen time with Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, but I would think that is inevitable eventually. It doesn’t seem like he will be in Elseworlds, as that has already wrapped filming, but you never know. There could be a quick cameo filmed in the next couple of weeks.

Michael Rosenbaum famously portrayed Lex Luthor in Smallville and gave Cryer his blessing, which meant a lot to him.

I am excited to see how he factors into this season of Supergirl. There is already so much going on in the show, that I hope he gets the time the iconic character deserves.

Supergirl airs Sundays only on The CW.

Season three saw Supergirl stop Reign and the other Worldkillers’ threat to humanity and our planet, and in the process, Kara was shocked to find her mother Alura alive and living in a salvaged Argo City that survived the destruction of Krypton. Reconnecting with her past caused Kara to realize that her true home is now here on Earth, where big changes are taking place for her and all of her friends in National City – and also, it appears, for a doppelganger in Russia! Season four promises to be full of surprises, action, adventure and lots of big revelations for Supergirl, Alex, James, J’onn, Lena and Brainy.
