Sony is on fire, securing its most successful year since 2012. Leading the charge is this year’s Venom which now brings it worldwide box office totals to $700 million and edging Sony past $2 billion in worldwide box office. Not too bad for a studio on the brink of collapse 4 years ago.

Last year’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Spider-Man Homecoming and this year’s Venom have really helped reposition Sony as a viable competitor in the ever-growing landscape which seems to be every other studio as a competitor to the goliath that is Disney. Since its debut, Venom has been shattering expectations, and with it seemingly slowing down, its release in China has boosted Venom’s status to new heights. Breaching $700 million worldwide has solidified its sequel and eliminated the in story need for a connective tissue with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Venom has been a film on the brink of production since 2007’s Spider-Man 3, and with the wave of success this film is currently riding it’s a wonder how it gestated in development hell for over 10 years. This film also opposes all critical narrative, as it continued to overtake new milestones with ease, further proof of a disconnect between critics and movie goers. This film’s success will also further the expansion and plans of a Spider-Verse for Sony, maybe Peter Parker never makes his way back to Sony Spider-Verse Movies, and instead Mile Morales is used. The concept of the Spider-Verse will be front center in next month’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and seeds of Miles Morales will firmly be planted then.

Sony has an impressive line-up of films on the horizon for 2019 starting with next month’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Men in Black Reboot, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Jumanji sequel.

Should Venom be the future of the Spider-Verse for Sony? Let us know in the comment section below. You can read our review of Venom HERE.
