The First Trailer For POKÉMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU Is Out!!!

I can’t be entirely sure, but I think I came relatively close to experiencing some form of time travel this morning. You see, I awoke to find the first trailer for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu out on YouTube and suddenly I was six years old again and seeing Pokémon: The First Movie on the big screen in 1999 for the very first time. Then I was seven, rewinding my VHS tape copy of that film over and over at the very end to see the sneak peek for the upcoming Pokémon: The Movie 2000.

But enough of my personal nostalgia. Let’s talk about the movie that could very well wind up sapping away some of the big money Marvel Studios has to be expecting for the fourth Avengers film: Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. By all accounts, this trailer shouldn’t be as great as it is. It’s a movie adaptation of a popular video game, one that requires the creative team to somehow figure out a way to believably transform some of the most bizarre and cartoonish fictional animals out there into a photorealistic live action setting.

Yet aside from one particular Pocket Monster, it would seem the production design team behind Detective Pikachu have succeeded in bringing these fan-favorite creatures to the big screen with flying colors. Ryan Reynolds’ titular talking Pikachu is appropriately adorable, Mr. Mime is now finally being recognized en masse for the freak show creation he always was and Charizard looks positively fantastic.

Jigglypuff, on the other hand, needs more work. I get what the team was going for and I love that they even included the character’s iconic pout from the original anime series, but I don’t think the furry texture suits the old Balloon Pokémon as well as the designers had hoped for. Still, that I only have issues with one Pokémon so far bodes well for the film as a whole.

What else can I say? I dig the Blade Runner-inspired aesthetic of Ryme City, the cast all look promising and Deadpool makes for a surprisingly awesome Pikachu. Hopefully this film delivers when it hits theaters next May!
