Ryan Coogler Talks Preparing For BLACK PANTHER 2
Surprising absolutely no one, director Ryan Coogler signed on to return to the MCU as the writer-director of Black Panther 2 last month. The first film was a massive hit with fans, critics and general audiences when it landed in theaters at the start of the year, so it only made sense that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige would want to bring the acclaimed filmmaker back for more. How is Coogler himself handling the new gig?
“I think the pressure is kind of always going to be there,” the filmmaker told IndieWire in a recent interview. “I’ve had a chance to make three feature films, each one of them had its own very specific type of pressure. In the process of it, it feels insurmountable each time.”
“When it comes to making a sequel, I’ve never done it before, a sequel to something that I’ve directed myself,” Coogler added. “So I think there’s gonna be a lot of pressure there, but what we’re going to try to do is just focus on the work, like we always do. Really try to go step by step and try to quiet everything else around us, really focus on trying to make something that has some type of meaning.”
Coogler brings up valid points. His first three films (Fruitvale Station, Creed and Black Panther) all had very different responsibilities and roles in the film industry. And while Creed was a sequel of sorts to the classic Rocky films, Coogler was continuing an existing narrative. Now the pressure is there for him to continue T’Challa’s story in the MCU in a meaningful and exciting way.
Personally I’m not too worried. Coogler is one of the best directors out there today and the fact that he’s the one openly talking about these details in interviews seems to clue in just how seriously he’s taking this project.
