Director Chris McKay Says NIGHTWING Is Still Going To Happen
It’s been awhile since we last heard anything about Chris McKay’s Nightwing film. Lewis Tan mentioned meeting with McKay back in July, but it’s been all quiet on the Hollywood front since. With the various drama that has circled around other parts of the DCU since then, it isn’t surprising that a number of fans were worried that McKay had left the film or that Nightwing was simply no longer on Warner Bros’ “To Do” list.
After being asked about the film’s status by a fan, McKay provided an update on Twitter, “No. You’re going to have to wait tho. Keep hope alive. To paraphrase Dick Grayson: Nightwing lives. Always.”
McKay is definitely not wrong about the waiting bit. His next film is reportedly a Dungeons & Dragons reboot and it only makes sense that Warner Bros would want to focus on Matt Reeves’ The Batman first before making a Nightwing movie. Personally I think (emphasis on the word ‘think’) that we’ll see Batgirl arrive in theaters before McKay’s film.
Whenever we do get McKay’s Nightwing film though, I think the wait will be worth it. He did a great job demonstrating his understanding and familiarity with Batman lore in The Lego Batman Movie in early 2017 and Dick Grayson is still one of the finest characters in that mythology. Hell, if I’m being completely honest with myself, I actually preferred him as Batman over Bruce at the start of the decade. If McKay shows the same attention to detail and affection for the character that he did in his last film, Nightwing should be something great.
