Robert Englund Open To Returning To NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Franchise
Robert Englund is best known for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street movies. His last time in the role was 2003’s Freddy Vs Jason. There was another film after that, which rebooted the franchise, and the role was played by Watchmen actor Jackie Earle Hayley. Now, following the success of Halloween– which erased Rob Zombie’s reboots, as well as all of the sequels to the original- people are naturally curious about whether Englund would consider returning for another Nightmare.
Englund talked to Access Live about his potential involvement in the future of the franchise.
“I think they want to reboot the franchise, but they’re gonna need a new actor. They’re gonna need a new actor to play Freddy because they’re gonna have to do eight of them. I might have one left in me… but yeah.”
A Logan-esque final story for Freddy starring Robert Englund? That could work. But maybe he could appear in the franchise as someone other than the nightmare killer?
Englund’s hesitation seems to stem from nothing more than the physical demands the role requires. He still loves the character very much.
In fact, he is portraying him again, very soon. Englund will reprise the role of Freddy in an episode of The Goldbergs for ABC. You can see a video of Englund in full costume promoting the episode below:
Here is a synopsis and a preview of the episode, which airs tomorrow, October 24.
“Despite Beverly’s wishes, Jackie’s parents allow Adam to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street and a disagreement between the families ensues. But Beverly dreams of facing off with horror icon Freddy Krueger (guest star Robert Englund), which teaches her an important lesson about her son’s relationship with Jackie. Meanwhile, Erica realizes she’s not as popular as she once was as she starts hanging out at William Penn Academy despite the fact she’s no longer a student there.”
It could very well be the last time he ever puts on the makeup and claws, but Englund is keeping hope up for all Freddy fans that he may indeed return in an official capacity.
The Goldbergs airs Wednesday nights on ABC.
