It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a year and a half since the last season of Daredevil debuted on Netflix! Granted it helps that the big Marvel-Netflix series The Defenders came out last year to help bridge the pass of time. More important though, with the third season of Daredevil finally up and available on Netflix for fans to watch, is how the events of last year’s crossover feed into where Matt Murdock starts off in the new season of Daredevil.

He is broken physically, broken emotionally, and broken spiritually,” showrunner Erik Olesson told Variety in a new interview. “A building fell on his head. He is not in a good place. He’s angry about what has happened to him and he’s got some issues to work through.

Olesson further indicated that Murdock begins the season troubled over how the events of Defenders impacted Elektra in particular, adding that the lawyer now has “very complicated feelings about how his good actions are punished instead of rewarded by God. He has a real chip on his shoulder about all of that. In the beginning of the season, he’s incapable of being Daredevil. He’s definitely in a downtrodden place.

Daredevil lead star Charlie Cox added, “He’s more reckless than he’s ever been…which I think could be very interesting. A superhero who’s kind of at risk of harming himself and others.

Additionally Olesson discussed the experience of what it’s like to be Daredevil‘s third showrunner, noting that his vision for the show was “a tonal mix of the much-celebrated first season of the series and The Sopranos.” The showrunner added that he wants to shake things up when it comes to the show’s now iconic fight sequences and referred to the experience as “a unique challenge.
